AIGA SB hosts the Santa Barbara premiere of worldwide hit Sign Painters: The Movie, followed by a Q+A with sign painter Nick Barber of Ventura, who features in the film.
As recently as the 1980s, storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint—but like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. Computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers have ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape, but there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.
Filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon traveled the country documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Their documentary is the first anecdotal history of this craft, featuring the stories of more than two dozen sign painters from throughout the United States. From New York to New Zealand, premiere screenings of Sign Painters: The Movie have sold out -- such is the film's popularity.
